Charlie Downs Joins El Dorado County Board of Education

00:00 AM - November 10, 2020

On November 10, Charlie Downs was officially appointed to the El Dorado County Board of Education by the Board of Supervisors after being interviewed and selected by Board of Education trustees. He is stepping into the vacant seat left by Debbie Akin, who chose not to run for another term after nine years of dedicated service to the board. His four-year term will begin on December 4, 2020.

“I am honored and excited to be joining the El Dorado Board of Education,” Charlie expressed. “Our communities are special places, and we are fortunate to have a great public educational system here in El Dorado County made possible by the many dedicated hard working staff at our schools and the El Dorado County Office of Education (EDCOE). I’m looking forward to working with Dr. Ed Manansala, County Superintendent, and the Board to ensure continued success and excellence for our students, as we navigate the current challenges and those ahead.”

Charlie is a professional architect and has participated as the architect of record for facilities in a wide range of school design committees throughout California. His work is primarily in El Dorado County for local school districts, including the El Dorado County Office of Education (EDCOE). He is very invested in the community and has served on several boards including Gold Country Center for the Arts (now Arts and Culture El Dorado), El Dorado Community Foundation and the Boys & Girls Club Western Slope.

Heidi Weiland, Board of Education President, remarked, “Through our interview and nomination process the board had the opportunity to meet with six very strong candidates, all with a passion for service and education, our students and their families. It was through these interviews that it became clear that Charlie Downs, with his history of community engagement and understanding of the relationship between the County Office of Education and individual districts, would be a great addition to our Board. We truly look forward to serving alongside him.”

“Mr. Downs’ fresh perspective and deep commitment to El Dorado County will strengthen the EDC Board during this critical time in education,” noted Dr. Ed Manansala, County Superintendent of Schools. “We welcome his addition to this team of individuals who are dedicated to our schools and students.”

His first board meeting will be December 15, 2020.
