County Child Support Director Announces Benefactor of Statewide Association’s Annual Fundraiser

Each year, the Child Support Directors Association of California (CSDA) raises funds to help support a non-profit charity selected by the CSDA president. Next year’s funds will support El Dorado County students identified as homeless by the McKinney-Vento Act through a charity called the Homeless Children Matter Fund.

“As the incoming president of the CSDA, I have the honor of choosing a worthy non-profit organization to be the beneficiary of the fundraising efforts this year,” said Don Semon, Director of El Dorado County’s Child Support Services. “In partnership with the El Dorado Community Foundation, we have created this fund to help make a difference in the lives of homeless children right here in El Dorado County.”

Fundraising activities will begin in August and continue until the CSDA annual training conference in May 2018. Historically, these fundraising activities have raised more than $25,000 annually for the selected charity.

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act ensures that children identified as homeless (defined as lacking a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence) receive access to all school programs and services for which they are eligible. These services include academic support, school nutrition, and transportation to the school where they were enrolled when permanently housed. In El Dorado County nearly 1,000 enrolled students have been identified by McKinney-Vento as homeless.

On a regular basis, children and youth report that school is a home for them—a place where they see the same faces, sit in the same seat and can put their hearts and minds into pursuits that help ease their daily troubles. In school, these children gain the skills and support needed to overcome poverty and homelessness as adults.

“We are thankful for CSDA and the El Dorado Community Foundation for taking these crucial steps to help create the support systems necessary for every child to succeed,” County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Ed Manansala, expressed.

Funding for the McKinney-Vento Act is limited. Donations help ensure homeless children in El Dorado County can receive much-needed academic services, school supplies, greater stability in their lives, and the hope for a better tomorrow. All donations are tax deductible.
