EDCOE Coat Drive Keeps Students In-need Warm for Winter

This year has presented many challenges for already disadvantaged families. Every year, the El Dorado County Office of Education (EDCOE) works with school districts and county educational programs to discreetly identify students who may not receive a coat for the cold winter. This year, EDCOE received more than 410 requests for this crucial piece of clothing. Requests were received from a variety of locations across the county.

To meet this need, EDCOE collected donations through the El Dorado County Education Fund, administered by the El Dorado Community Foundation. Several major donors contributed including The Women’s Fund El Dorado – Lighthouse Fund, Kiwanis Club of Placerville, Rotary Club of Cameron Park, Spartans Soccer Team and Schools First Financial Credit Union. Individual donors also contributed significantly to make this possible.

“Our generous sponsors and individual donors helped provide the funding necessary to fulfill every request,” Dr. Ed Manansala, El Dorado County Superintendent of Schools, noted. “Thank you for helping to keep El Dorado County children warm this winter!”

Due to the pandemic, and the need to limit exposure, EDCOE did not collect physical coats. Monetary donations were collected, and coats were purchased online which were shipped directly to school sites.

“This year has been particularly tough for our families in need,” stated Carey Buchanan, Gold Trail Union School District Interim Superintendent. “We are so thankful for EDCOE administering this program that directly benefits our students in such an important way.”
