Interview with LuAnn:

Briefly describe your background (where you grew up, family, why you came to work for EDCOE).

I was born, raised, and still live in West Sacramento. I’ve lived in the same house for the past 28 years where I raised a daughter who also works in education and a son who works in the food industry.

My entire career has been in public education. I had the opportunity to work in Curriculum and Instruction for 12 years before transferring to Human Resources. A friend and work colleague told me about the Personnel Coordinator job at EDCOE and every day I’m grateful that I was chosen for the position. Having worked in education for years, I had heard great things about EDCOE and from my first day on the job I knew EDCOE was a special place and that I was working with amazing people.

What is your department, title, and how long have you worked for EDCOE?

I’ve been the Personnel Coordinator at EDCOE for the past 3½ years.

Describe how your role helps support programs/schools/students directly or indirectly.

I love my role as Personnel Coordinator as I have the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of human resources. I attend job fairs to promote EDCOE and the districts within our county and recruit for open positions; have the privilege of meeting each new EDCOE and Charter hire during the new employee orientation process; and, I’m able to be a resource to our department, EDCOE programs and districts when questions arise regarding personnel matters, leaves, workers’ compensation, credentialing, etc. I truly believe in the “human” aspect of human resources and that treating everyone with compassion and respect creates a positive working environment.

What are you and your team doing to support education in El Dorado County during the COVID-19 facility closures?

We are continuing to recruit and hire so when the closure ends we will hopefully be fully staffed. Our team is also assisting with questions from districts regarding personnel matters, credentialing, and hiring/onboarding strategies as well as answering questions from staff. We are here to assist in any way we can to help EDCOE staff and the districts during these trying times.

What do you most appreciate about your department/team?

I appreciate the fact that our Personnel Services team is like family. We are a close knit group that is very supportive and always there for each other.

What is your proudest moment at EDCOE? Why?

I’m very proud of our team’s effort in sharing ideas and providing resources for the daily wellness emails to EDCOE staff during our closure. It’s been exciting to receive such positive feedback from many EDCOE staff who do not normally participate in our regular wellness challenges. Our hope is that these daily emails help us all feel more connected to one another and provide a positive start to each day.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Travel with my husband and spend time with our three grandchildren (twin 5-year old boys and their 3-year old sister).

I love to garden! Over the years I have planted so that there is something in bloom all year long. I’m also a sucker for that sad, little plant shoved in the corner at a nursery. I tend to always bring it home and nurse it back to health. Some of these finds are fixtures in the yard and others were not such a good idea.

I’m a huge SF Giants fan. My dad bought me my first baseball mitt and took me to my first game when I was 6 years old, and I’ve been attending games (with my mitt) ever since. I’ve been fortunate enough to experience everything from seeing Willie Mays play against the Dodgers, to the Giants winning a World Series, to catching a Brandon Belt foul ball.

What is something many people may not know about you?

I’m a collector - stamps, coins, old books, SF Giants memorabilia, rocks from places traveled, antique ceramics and vases.

If you could meet anyone in the world, living or deceased, who would it be and why?

Dr. Seuss. With social distancing in effect, I’ve enjoyed reading bedtime stories to our grandkids via FaceTime and one of them always chooses a Dr. Seuss book. I would like to thank him for creating books that are fun, whimsical, and educational that generations of children and adults have enjoyed. I’ve read these books so often – as a child, to my children, and now to my grandchildren that I feel as though I know most of them by heart. My favorite Dr. Seuss book, The Lorax, was written in the 1970’s and was ahead of its time educating us to take care of the Earth.

LuAnn is critical to the Personnel team in supporting EDCOE. She also provides support to and is a resource for district staff in the area of personnel. She is knowledgeable in all aspects in personnel – recruitment and hiring, leaves, evaluation, etc. She is instrumental in the new employee orientations, assisting new employees in getting acclimated to EDCOE. She also leads the Compensation Study that takes place each year for our Merit-based positions. LuAnn is our “Wellness Champion” as well, supporting our staff in healthy habits. LuAnn brings a positive, can-do attitude each day. Her energy and enthusiasm is contagious. Employees feel comfortable coming to her, which I attribute to her kind and caring manner in which she works with people. She is conscientious in her work and diligent in her follow-through. She has a smile on her face at all times. I cannot say enough about what an asset LuAnn is to EDCOE and El Dorado County! She is amazing in her work ethic and a very special person with a heart of gold!
