Camino Union Elementary School District Announces New Superintendent/Principal

12:00 PM - July 12, 2023

The following message was sent to the Camino community by the Camino Union School District:

This evening, Tuesday, July 11, the Camino Union School District (CUSD) Board unanimously approved the selection of Dr. Brett Nelson as their new Superintendent/Principal. Following the meeting, CUSD Board President Judy Morris stated, “On behalf of the Camino Union School District Board of Trustees, I welcome Dr. Brett Nelson to the Camino USD team. Our governance team is honored to have someone of his outstanding integrity and expertise to join our team. Dr. Nelson brings a wealth of educational experience, management skills and a perspective of leadership driven by a positive culture and teamwork. He lives in Camino and is active in the community. He grew up in our area and is invested in the success of our students. We look forward to the positive impact Dr. Nelson will have for our community and school district.”

Dr. Nelson began his career in education over 23 years ago. He has served as a classroom teacher, Assistant/Vice Principal (K-12), Principal (Elementary), Coordinator (Special Education), and Director. Dr. Nelson comes to Camino after most recently serving as Director (with all administrative responsibilities for Outdoor Education programs and services at Sly Park) for the Sacramento County Office of Education. He brings a wealth of knowledge and (19 years of) experience in leadership, educational program development, budget/fiscal oversight, professional development, conflict management, student services, educational technology and human resources. He is highly regarded as leading with an inclusive, collaborative style and is committed to continuing to lead and support CUSD and its dedicated and supportive community.

Nelson has a Ph.D. in Christian Counseling from the Newburgh Theological Seminary, a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from National University and a Bachelors’ degree in Social Sciences from California State University, Sacramento. Nelson and his family reside in the community and he is very involved and dedicated to a number of local organizations in great support of Camino.

In acceptance of the appointment, Nelson stated, “As a resident of Camino, it is a great privilege to accept the position of Superintendent/Principal for Camino Union Elementary School District. There is no greater honor for me than to be able to bring my experience, knowledge, and commitment to serve the students, staff, and community in the town that I call home. Education has faced many challenges in recent years, but I have learned that by setting priorities and working to stay focused on what is truly important, a school can meet the needs of every child. Working collaboratively with the school board, staff, and parents, we can make the 2023-2024 school year one of the best school years for the students of Camino.“

The El Dorado County Office of Education (EDCOE) supported the Camino Board with the recruitment and selection process. The CUSD Board of Trustees completed its careful, thoughtful process, including input and participation from staff, parents and community members, to select the best fitting candidate for this top leadership position.

Dr. Brett Nelson will begin in this position on July 18, 2023. For more information regarding CUSD, visit
