EDCOE Hosts Collaborative Workshop with Katie Garner

15:50 PM - October 02, 2024

This month, EDCOE proudly hosted an inspiring workshop titled Teaching Phonics With the Brain in Mind, led by international keynote speaker and author Katie Garner. EDCOE’s Curriculum, Instruction, and Accountability (CI&A) and Early Learning and Family Support (ELFS) departments partnered to bring this exciting opportunity to 81 educators from across the county.

Katie Garner is renowned for her innovative approach that combines the Science of Reading with the Science of Learning. Her methods focus on making phonics accessible and engaging, using storytelling and brain-based strategies to enhance literacy skills in young learners. With her engaging style and wealth of knowledge, Katie empowers educators to ignite a passion for reading in their students.

There was a buzz of excitement from around the county surrounding this event! Alison Gimpel, EDCOE’s Curriculum, Instruction and Accountability Coordinator for P-3 Education, shares, "This event was inspired by the enthusiasm of our El Dorado County teachers for Katie and her work. Many of our educators already incorporate the Secret Stories strategies alongside their district-adopted curriculum. Their dedication to enhancing and aligning instructional practices from preschool through 3rd grade facilitated Katie's visit to EDCOE. Our teachers gained a deeper understanding of the science of reading and learning, equipping them to continue the essential work of improving reading outcomes for all students."

Educators all over El Dorado County are now eager to learn how to apply these cutting-edge techniques in their classrooms, ensuring students receive the best literacy instruction possible.
