EDCOE Team Member Spotlight: Congratulations Nancy Jurd!

08:15 AM - September 04, 2024

Briefly describe your background (where you grew up, your family, and why you came to work for EDCOE).

Well, I grew up in a cute small farming town called Dixon, California. Home of the famous country singer Jon Pardi. It was a simple life, full of community and good, hardworking folks. I got married to a wonderful man, and we moved around a bit because of his job in wine sales management. After I retired, we decided it was time for a change from the hustle and bustle of the Bay Area, so we settled in beautiful El Dorado Hills. We had always loved visiting Tahoe, and living here just felt right. I started helping out my neighbors by picking up their kids from the Extended Day program, and that’s when I got the idea to apply for a job. Wouldn’t you know it, they called me in the very next day, and the rest is history!

What is your department, title, primary work location, and how long have you worked for EDCOE?

I’m proud to be a part of the Extended Day team as an instructor. I get to work with the little ones, from TK to fifth grade, and I’ve been doing this for eight wonderful years. It’s such a rewarding retirement job, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Describe how your role helps support programs/schools/students directly or indirectly.

Oh, my role is all about those sweet children. I work closely with the teachers at Oak Meadow to make sure we’re providing a safe and structured environment where the kids can thrive. I’m a bit of a creative soul, and I love keeping the kids active with things like workout days, yoga, and art projects. We often do big, week-long projects that really let their imaginations run. And with the older kids, I get to have a bit of fun playing sports like volleyball and tennis. It’s all about making sure they’re moving and enjoying themselves.

What do you most appreciate about your department/team?

The support I receive from my team is just wonderful. They really listen to my ideas and give me the freedom to implement them. It’s such a blessing to work in an environment where my input is valued. The person I most value is Joy Zakem. Without her, I wouldn't be the instructor I've become. She provided me with guidance, advice, and encouragement.

What is your proudest moment at EDCOE? Why?

Oh dear, there have been so many proud moments over the years! But if I had to choose, I’d say it was last year during our Christmas pageant. I was able to introduce the children to the joy of music, and that really touched my heart. I’m also proud of the time I got two boys interested in tennis—they loved it so much that their parents signed them up for lessons! It’s such a pleasure to see the impact I can have on these young lives, helping them find their passions and feel comfortable enough to talk to me about them. When I see a child struggling and I’m able to help them engage and enjoy school, that’s when I know I’ve done something right.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

In my spare time, you’ll often find me out in the yard —that’s my way of unwinding. I also have a passion for painting, and I love getting out into nature for a hike. Oh, my favorite thing to do is family time with my daughter Kayla, husband Thomas and Daisy our sweet dog.

What is something many people may not know about you?

Well, not everyone knows this, I'm not athletic or coordinated at all I just pretend in order to get the kids interested in sports.  I’m also a big football fan! I’ve got the Oak Ridge game schedule right up in the classroom, and I’m a devoted 49ers fan.

If you could meet anyone, living or deceased, who would it be and why?

If I could meet anyone, I think I’d choose Sean Hannity. My daughter’s roommate was interviewed by him and mentioned how kind and genuine he is—he really listens to people. I’d love to sit down and have a good conversation with him.
