EDCOE Team Member Spotlight: Jenn Beard

09:45 AM - October 24, 2024

Briefly describe your background (where you grew up, your family, and why you came to work for EDCOE).

I grew up here in El Dorado County and I attended Pioneer Elementary School and El Dorado High School. As the oldest of 6 children, it seemed natural for me to focus on a career with children. So, my senior year I enrolled in the Child Development ROP and assumed that would start my career in education. I started a family, two beautiful daughters that inspire me daily and a wonderful husband of 30 years. In our twenties my husband and I took a chance and opened a restaurant on Main Street in Placerville. We enjoyed serving the community for the next decade. After the restaurant I decided I wanted to go back to working in education. I discovered Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and did some work with in-home therapy. That’s when I realized a passion for working with children with special needs. That desire to make a difference in their lives brought me to EDCOE.

What is your department, title, primary work location, and how long have you worked for EDCOE?

My position at EDCOE is Instructional Assistant - Autism within the Special Services Department.  I have been at the Schnell Elementary School site for 7 years and I am celebrating my 13th year with EDCOE.

Describe how your role helps support programs/schools/students directly or indirectly.

My position allows me to work side by side with both students and staff. I help support students academically and emotionally. My favorite part is facilitating social situations with my students that help foster independence and relationships with peers.

What do you most appreciate about your department/team?

During my time at EDCOE, I have worked at 3 different school sites from TK-8th grade. I have had the opportunity to work with some amazing coworkers, admins, and mentors, many of which I consider friends. What I appreciate most is the exchanging of ideas, where I feel heard and know that we are all prioritizing the needs of our kiddos.

What is your proudest moment at EDCOE? Why?

I would say my proudest moment with EDCOE couldn’t be defined with one moment but a collection of moments. I’ve worked with amazing kids through the years. It’s exciting to watch kids meet goals and then exceed them. I run into past students and love to hear about all of their newfound adventures. The kids are my proudest moment!

What do you like to do in your spare time?

In my spare time you will most likely find me at the soccer field, golf course, cross country course or anywhere else my two wonderful grandkids may lead me. My goal is for them to always think of me as their biggest cheerleader.

What is something many people may not know about you?

Something you may not know about me is my love for binge watching the old episodes of Law & Order.

If you could meet anyone, living or deceased, who would it be and why?

I think it would be awesome to meet Mariska Hargitay. Her character Olivia Benson on Law & Order shows so much empathy and passion. Mariska seems to bring that same passion into her personal life through her foundation, Joyful Heart.
