08:00 AM - May 13, 2024

Against the backdrop of El Dorado County's majestic landscapes, a group of young leaders is making strides with fresh perspective, passion, and advocacy. The El Dorado County Youth Commission works cohesively to amplify the voices of the county's youth within the halls of local governance. Every year, students apply and are appointed to represent each of the five supervisorial districts in the county.

At a recent El Dorado County Board of Supervisors meeting, the Youth Commission presented their endeavors from the past school year. Their focus has been improving mental health and wellness among their peers. Commissioners articulated their efforts throughout the meeting, demonstrating how they've worked tirelessly to raise awareness in their schools and communities. From organizing events to engaging in peer advocacy, their dedication was on full display.

This year, their efforts culminated in the 5th annual county-wide Student Wellness Week. The week-long event featured a multifaceted approach, including a robust social media campaign that reached students across school districts.

Reflecting on the collaboration, Matt Smith, Director of Mental Health and Wellness at El Dorado County Office of Education (EDCOE), expressed his gratitude for the partnership with the Youth Commission. "It has been an honor to work with the Youth Commission in advocating for Student Mental Health and Peer-to-Peer Advocacy programs," Smith remarked. "They are an amazing group of young leaders, and it's a pleasure to work with them."

As the meeting drew to a close, Smith extended his appreciation to the graduating seniors, acknowledging their remarkable contributions and expressing confidence in their journey beyond high school. Looking ahead, he emphasized the ongoing need to improve student access to mental health services, affirming EDCOE's commitment to further collaboration with the Youth Commission.

As the curtains fall on another chapter, the El Dorado County Youth Commission stands poised, ready to tackle the challenges that lie ahead. Their voices echo within the boardroom and across the county, inspiring change and fostering a brighter future for generations.
