Health & Safety: Information Regarding the Novel Coronavirus

14:25 PM - February 28, 2020

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has urged schools to prepare for a possible 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in the United States. While the CDC’s comments have generated concern, Health Officials believe the risk to the general community is low, and communities are encouraged to use best practices to avoid spreading respiratory infections and other viruses.

We want to assure you that EDCOE is working closely with our County Health Department to monitor the situation. The following provides a list of preventative actions and helpful resources:

  1. Continue disease prevention practices that are already in place at schools: frequent handwashing, regularly sanitizing surfaces, reminding staff and students to cover their nose and mouth when sneezing and coughing, and directing staff and students to stay home when sick.
  2. Ensure communication protocols with public health agencies and families are in place and up to date.  This is a good reminder to contact your school with any changes to your contact information.
  3. Any child or staff member who recently traveled abroad should refer to the Centers for Disease Control website for the most current information regarding quarantine instructions.
  4. According to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), face masks are recommended for individuals who have symptoms of, or are infected with, the virus.
  5. If a school closure becomes necessary, the decision will be made in collaboration with County Public Health and individual school districts.
  6. For additional information, please see the Centers for Disease Control Information website.
