The Kiwanis Club of Placerville recently presented Kylie Cox with the Student Service Leader of the Month award for February because of her determined efforts as President of the Ponderosa High School (PHS) Key Club. Kiwanis hosts student leadership Key Clubs at El Dorado, Ponderosa and Union Mine High Schools where students organize programs to benefit the community. After receiving the award, Kylie expressed, “I’m so honored to receive this award, and I’m glad that I’ve been able to help my community through Ponderosa Key Club.”

Dina Gentry, Placerville Kiwanis President and award committee member, explained, “Our student service leaders are selfless and passionate about their work that benefits many. I’m very proud of Kylie and her long listing of accomplishments.”

Kylie is a senior and has served in the Key Club for four years. Jean Meyers, Kiwanis Key Club Advisor, noted during the presentation, “Kylie has done so much as President of this Club including, volunteering at the Cameron Park Library, Harvest Festivals at the elementary schools, ice cream socials, Ponderosa Foundation dinners, peer tutoring in chemistry and algebra and leading this club through the most difficult of times. The club managed to team up with Hands for Hope to support their boutique and hosted a drive through thank you note collection that delivered messages to health care workers.”

Jean continued, “In addition to all of her service and leadership hours, Kylie maintains a part-time job, maintains a 5.0 GPA for this school year, obtained a perfect score on the ACT test, has been offered a full-ride scholarship to the University of Alabama, accepted to Notre Dame, will study neuroscience to become a neurologist and was informed that she will be the 2020-2021 school year PHS valedictorian!”

Jeremy Hunt, PHS Principal, attended the presentation and expressed, “Kylie is exceptionally hard working, and dedicated to always doing her best. She marches along the proverbial "road less traveled" by consistently challenging herself and pursuing excellence in her academics. Kylie's dedication has propelled her to the top of the class of 2021, and she will represent her class as valedictorian at this year's Ponderosa High School graduation ceremony. When she recently met with PHS administrators and counselors to be informed of her valedictorian status, it was noted that the class of 2021 has achieved at a level not seen among other recent graduating classes. Kylie has led that charge to the top!”
