Rolling Hills Church Collects School Supplies for Students in Need

The circumstances surrounding COVID-19 have presented many challenges, but Rolling Hills Christian Church and their generous congregation did not let those challenges prevent them from providing school supplies to those most in need. Their collective efforts produced dozens of backpacks and many large boxes of school supplies. Matt Kowalski, Care and Outreach Pastor, expressed, “I am so glad that we were able to make this happen during the pandemic. It is important for our children to be well-equipped for school, especially today. Every bit helps.”

The church administers this annual drive, collects for weeks and collaborates with local schools to distribute materials. Margaret Lewis, El Dorado County Office of Education’s (EDCOE) Homeless Youth Coordinator, worked with the church and will connect with El Dorado County schools and families in need to deliver backpacks filled with supplies such as crayons, markers, folders, binder paper, pencil cases, and more. Margaret expressed that, “We are so fortunate to have people like Rolling Hills Church’s congregation who give with their hearts no matter what they might be dealing with personally. Thank you for everything!”

“During this challenging time, educators are working tirelessly to deliver a quality education to all students, with particular attention to the most vulnerable,” Dr. Ed Manansala, County Superintendent of Schools, noted. “We thank Rolling Hills Christian Church for supporting our students and schools with such care and service.”

EDCOE’s Homeless Youth program, operating under the federal McKinney-Vento Act, helps to identify students who are experiencing homelessness in order to assist in ensuring that there are no lapses to the children’s education during times of housing transition and being houseless. The program also works to eliminate barriers that may stand in the way of full participation in educational programs. The Homeless Youth Coordinator works with El Dorado County districts and schools, as well as partnering with community agencies and nonprofits to provide support to these efforts.
